| The newly-established Arrhythmia Center, Korea University
exists to provide arrhythmia and heart patients with timely,
accurate diagnoses and therapies. We do this by using
advanced technologies and working as a team with you,
your family, and your physician to help you continue or
return to your normal daily activities as soon as possible.
The Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology Service began
in the early 1990s with two goals: to provide leading
edge care for patients with irregular heart rhythms
(arrhythmias) and to do research to determine the cause
of arrhythmias and develop treatments for patients who
have heart rhythm problems.
As the first arrhythmia center in Korea, our service
will take on a leadership role. An early success was
the first basic animal research on cardiac arrhythmias
(single cell transmembrane potential recordings, etc),
the first catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation,
and the first introduction of three-dimensional mapping
system in Korea. Since then, various kinds of basic
and clinical research projects are in progress.
The center represents all the efforts within the adult
and pediatric cardiac arrhythmic disciplines. Each of
these programs works together in a manner that seeks
synergistic opportunities for greater understanding
of cardiac arrhythmia and cardiovascular disease. Currently,
all the staffs in the Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology
Center are focusing our efforts on catheter
ablation, a technique that can cure abnormal heart rhythms.
Other areas of clinical and research interest include
the causes and treatment of supraventricular tachycardia,
ventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation and syncope
(fainting), the prevention and treatment of problems
that may cause cardiac death, as well as further perfecting
pacemaker including cardiac resynchronization, and ICD
therapy.
The Web site of Arrhythmia Center, Korea University
provides patients with diagnosed or suspected abnormal
heart rhythm disease the opportunity to receive comprehensive
and efficient care. This approach brings together cardiology
professionals from several heart and arrhythmia-related
specialties to coordinate patients' care. Timely communication
with the patients and referring physician is coordinated
by the care-giving team. The program may be accessed
by patients, primary care providers, cardiologists,
surgeons and other referring physicians.
